Breast Thermography Screening + The FDA

The Food and Drug Administration has cleared Thermography as an adjunctive screening tool.   It is important to understand that breast Thermography is not a stand alone procedure for breast cancer screening and does not replace Mammography

WHAT IS IT?

Thermography is a screening tool which can detect temperature differences from the surface of the body. Increased surface temperature could indicate the presence of a tumor (due to increased blood vessel formation), inflammation, infection, vascular disease, etc. Thermography is commonly used as a breast cancer screening

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Thermographers use digital cameras that record infrared radiation emitted by the human body and convert them into temperature readings from the images.  Thermologist’s (MD’s) are then able to identify areas of temperature difference in relation to the opposite side of the body.  Areas with decreased blood flow will have colder temperature readings and areas of increased blood flow will have warmer temperature readings.

Tumors are able to be found on thermal imaging through the process known as Angioneogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to a tumor.  This asymmetric increase in blood flow creates an increase in temperature that can be picked up by medical thermal cameras.

What Can Thermography Detect?

  • Breast Cancer

  • Thyroid Pathology

  • Cerebrovascular Health

  • Nerve Pathology

  • Inflammation

  • Infection

  • Fibrocystic breast disease

  • Vascular disease

  • Lymphatic stagnation

  • Breast Health

  • Any alteration of Skin Surface Temperature

HIGHLIGHTS + BENEFITS

Why Initially Choose Breast Thermography vs Mammography

  • 100% safe

  • Radiation free

  • Contact free

  • Compression free

  • Comfortable and convenient

  • Effective for women with dense breasts and implants

  • Effective for establishing an individualized baseline of breast health

  • An effective screening tool for women under 40 who are overlooked by current breast cancer screening guidelines

FAQ

  1. How much does it cost?

Between $250 - $350 depending on the type of scan, which is much less than the cost of Mammograms and other screening tools.  This cost covers the test and the interpretation consult with a Thermologist.

  2. Does Insurance cover the cost?

No. Thermography is not currently covered under most commercial insurance plans. However, the test is an eligible expense for most Health savings Accounts

  3. Who interprets the scan results?

We work with a large team of Thermologists (usually MD’s) who have been specially trained in the interpretation of these images.

  4. How will I get my results?

You will set up a Patient Portal at thermographicwellness.com and enter all pertinent information prior to your test.  After we take your images, they will be uploaded to the Thermologist.  You will set up an appointment (phone consult) with the Thermologist to go over your scans. The interpreters that we work with are certified through the Professional Academy of Clinical Thermology (PACT), a non-profit organization striving to bring standards to the medical thermal imaging industry. You will receive a written report after your consultation.
